Detecting Single Gold Nanoparticles (1.8 nm) with Ultrahigh-Q Air-Mode Photonic Crystal Nanobeam Cavities

In this paper Qimin and Feng demonstrate detection of single nanoparticles down to 1.8 nm in diameter using photonic crystal nanobeam cavities. The technique can be used to perform frequent and rapid size characterization on the limited samples of nanoparticles. Furthermore, the nanobeam cavity is potentially an ideal platform to enhance the interaction between single molecules, atoms, or solid-state quantum emitters with photons.
